A gluten free life can be broken down into many areas, it does not need to be a restrictive life. With careful planning you can avoid many of the pitfalls that are along the road, admittedly it does have a downside; if you are not careful. Gluten can creep into your diet in many hidden ways, that are not visual because you can not taste gluten it does not mean, that it is not there.
Avoid processed foods as most of these contain hidden ingredients that are not always shown on the label. When choosing any food product it is advisable to check the label. There are safe and unsafe foods, which some are definitely safe. Though you do need to take care that these do not come into contact with other foods, that do contain gluten which you may not know is there.
Whenever you are in doubt whether something is safe, err on the side of caution and leave it off the plate. If you do not purchase it in the first place, you will be sure you are safe. There is another thing that you have to watch for and that is, what may be safe today may not always be safe tomorrow or within a short space of time.
Restaurants, cafes, hotels, hospitals and other places like airlines and shipping lines do not always cater for those with special dietary needs and they do not have to. Anywhere that you are eating away from home, if you can plan well in advance inform them; of your specialist dietary needs. Again when you arrive make sure that you again let them know, that you are on a gluten free diet.
You become a master label reader very quickly. What you a one point would not thought about reading you soon start, paying close attention to. At the start you many panic, with what seems to be a mine field of ingredients. Thoughts spinning in your mind, can I eat this or is that safe, what can I order, do I need to plan a head. Absolutely if you are going on holiday, into hospital, going out for the day, staying with friends or family. Soon planning will be second nature.
There will be times at the start when you feel you are over burdened with information, or lack of it when you need it. Even sometimes experts are confused, by all the changes. The best people to really find out information from, about what you can or can not eat. Are those that must follow a gluten free diet.
Manufacturers sometimes play the guessing game, it May Contain, Wheat, Rye, Barley. Sometimes Oats may be unsafe. A product could be safe at the point of production, though by the time it gets to storage is could be unsafe. That is very reassuring, that you buy something thinking that it is safe, only to get told it may not be safe due to the manufacturing process.
